Erik Satie
Despite their famed relationship, Suzanne Valadon and Erik Satie were actually only together for six months, from January to June 1893. The relationship began soon after Valadon had split up with Miquel Utrillo, which drove a wedge between the two men as well. Valadon and Satie didn’t work as a couple, apparently because of the musician’s jealous nature and excesses. Artistically, the relationship left behind a celebrated portrait of Satie painted by Valadon, which he kept for the rest of his life. Musically, it led to the Satie’s much-lauded Vexations, which he composed while mourning the end of his relationship with Biqui, his pet name for Valadon, who was the only partner the musician was known to have.
