Explore the exhibition Zurbar\u00e1n (Super)natural: a unique perspective on the master of the Spanish Baroque<\/h1>\n

This MNAC exhibition<\/a> will show how Zurbar\u00e1n\u2019s work reaches into the contemporary world. It will also<\/strong> place his paintings in dialogue with works by contemporary artists who share a clear continuity with him, both in formal synthesis and in spiritual aspiration. Among these artists are<\/strong> Alfons Borrell, Toni Catany, Joan Hern\u00e1ndez Pijuan, Josep Guinovart, Antoni Llena, Aur\u00e8lia Mu\u00f1oz, Marta Povo and Antoni T\u00e0pies. In addition<\/strong>, Antoni Llena and Eul\u00e0lia Valldosera have created new works specifically for this exhibition.<\/p>\n

The MNAC is also<\/strong> collaborating with the Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts of Lyon<\/a> and the Museum of Fine Arts de Boston on this project, which will bring together for the first time the three versions of Saint Francis of Assisi according to Pope Nicholas V\u2019s Vision<\/em>, a key work by Francisco de Zurbar\u00e1n (1598\u20131664).<\/p>\n\n <\/h2>\n <\/article>\n

Saint Francis of Assisi according to Pope Nicholas V\u2019s Vision<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n

In this painting, Zurbar\u00e1n depicts a legendary episode: the moment when the Pope asks to see the mummified body of the saint in the crypt of the basilica in Assisi. The painter distils a complex narrative action and focuses on what is essential: the Pope\u2019s subjective vision. Saint Francis appears like a figure displayed in a museum, surrounded by light, space and a precise geometric composition. Through the contemplation of the real, Zurbar\u00e1n leads us towards an inner dimension, towards the soul.<\/p>\n

In addition, the exhibition Zurbar\u00e1n Barcelona<\/em><\/strong> brings together other outstanding works, including the twin \u2013 and subtly different \u2013 versions of his celebrated Still Life with Vessels<\/em><\/a>, one on loan from the Museo del Prado and the other belonging to the MNAC. In these paintings, Zurbar\u00e1n creates an aesthetic of emptiness, silence and presence. The boundary between everyday life and religious mystery becomes blurred.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/article>\n \n
