More Formiguera

This small-format exhibition presents a selection of work from this artist, a noteworthy member of the first generation of Spanish artists to take up photography as a means of artistic expression.

Pere Formiguera Donation. Creative drive

In 2016, the Formiguera family deposited the entire collection of Pere Formiguera (Barcelona 1952-2013) with the Museu Nacional, thus aligning themselves with the wishes of other photographers of his generation whose work is also part of the museum’s photography collection. This initial deposit, after being cleaned, restored, digitalised and inventoried by the museum, has now, in 2023, become a generous donation from the family. This contribution is very important to the museum, as it helps continue increasing the quality and depth of the photography collection, which is currently the fastest growing section.

It intends to show some examples of the works donated. It features works from his most well-known series, such as Chronos and With the Eyes Closed, as well as some of his more experimental pieces from the 1980s, like the Polaroid and Pixie series, among others. A multifaceted artist, photography historian, collector and curator of exhibitions, Pere Formiguera’s work can be found in the MoMA in New York, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, MACBA and Fonds national d’art contemporain in Paris.

“Photography isn’t an art form. It’s a technique. A photograph can become a piece of art. But that doesn’t mean it is ALWAYS art. So calling photography ‘the art of light’ is utter nonsense.”
